Last Friday, jadanzzy and I had the opportunity to share some thoughts on Asian American identity with the InterVarsity Asian American Christian Fellowships at Emory and Georgia Tech.
Here’s the slideshow I prepared for it:
If you only get an hour to discuss identity formation, I think it’s very good to leave the conversation very open. Although we definitely jam-packed the hour with information and activity, the one idea, if I might reduce it so, we wanted to convey was that it is not enough to always be formed by the greater community, whatever that might be. It is that we should take an active role in the formation of our identity. Instead of always asking what the Word of God says about being Asian American, we need to ask how being Asian American influences the way we read scripture. I think this will help in a healthy dialogue with the Word, which as John Calvin says, when we discover God, we discover ourselves – and then we discover God again and God reveals us again. That is a good pursuit and formation of identity, methinks…for right now…but I stand to be corrected.
